According to the SEM imagines, the pure surface was smooth with a scaly structure in Fig. 2a while an obvious thin film was observed in Fig. 2c, which was in agreement with the surface topography photographed by AFM in Fig. 2b and d. It was obvious that the pure surface was smooth, as shown in Fig. 2b.

A ceramic coating was synthesized in this manuscript by the non-electrode plasma electrolysis technique for the purpose. The result showed that a cubic γ-Al2O3 coating was deposited on the graphite with a thickness of ~50 nm.
